A driveway is only as good as the base under it. Stone dumped on soft ground disappears into the dirt by the second wet season.
We build the base, crown the surface so water sheds to the sides, and cut ditches or a culvert when the road side needs it.

How We Handle the Job

Lay out the run
We stake the route, check the width for trucks, and look at how it ties into the road.

Strip and prep
Topsoil and soft material come off so the base sits on something solid.

Build the base
Base rock goes down and gets compacted before any surface stone.

Crown it
The center sits high so water runs off the sides instead of down the middle.

Top and roll
Surface stone goes on, gets spread even, and rolled tight.

- Compact roller for base compaction

Why Experience Matters Here
The number one reason a gravel drive fails around here is no crown and no base. Water runs down the middle, cuts a channel, and takes the stone with it.
We also size the culvert to the ditch instead of just dropping in whatever is on the truck. An undersized pipe backs water up onto your property.
Driveways Questions We Get Asked
What kind of stone works best for a driveway here?
A compacted base with crusher run or graded aggregate, then a top of number 57 stone if you want the clean look. Straight 57 with no base rides nice for a month and then sinks.
How thick should the stone be?
Figure four to six inches of compacted base for a residential drive, more if dump trucks or equipment trailers will be on it regularly.
Can you fix a driveway that washes out every storm?
Usually. We regrade to restore the crown, add base where it has thinned out, and cut a ditch or swale along the low side so water leaves the drive instead of running down it.
